Sarah Ferrara is a British professional portrait and wedding photographer and has lived in Northern Italy since 1996. Her academic background is in classical and musical theatre (she attended the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England, and completed their three year undergraduate acting program in 1993) and translation (she holds a Masters of Arts degree in Italian Translation). In addition to her native Wales and now Italy, Sarah has also lived for varying periods in Germany, the Sinai, Thailand and New York.
Awards and Experience
Less than a year after picking up a DSLR camera at the age of 38, Sarah was working professionally in wedding, portrait and fashion photography, and within seven years she received her first Gold Award and 1st Place at WPPI’s Premiere category, achieving WPPI Associate status in her first year.
She consolidated her debut success the following year with a 1st Place award in the Portrait Teenager Category, 2nd Place in Portrait Maternity and 2nd Place for
In-Camera Artistry, with a total of two gold, four silver distinctions and nine silver honors of excellence in the 2018 WPPI Print, Album and Filmmaking Competition, all in portrait categories. She has also received two gold awards from the UK’s Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers (SWPP), is one of the first photographers to receive the points required for Associate status from the Portrait Master awards and accreditation program, in March receiving two 1st Place awards, a 2nd Place and 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place simultaneously in a single category (Boudoir), as well as an additional four images in the top 20 galleries out of over 6500 entries worldwide.
Sarah does all hair, make-up (including special effects), styling and retouching herself, and usually works without an assistant. She has photographed over 100 weddings in the last three years in addition to studio and location portraits.
Her work in wedding, fashion and portrait photography has been featured online and in printed publications around the world, including Rangefinder, Pianist magazine (cover), Professional Imagemaker, White Sposa, and Wedding Ideas (UK) among others,
Sarah holds weekly live portrait retouching and colour grading classes with students from around the world, provides one-to-one portfolio critiques and photography mentoring to professional photographers (including other instructors) and holds portrait photography retreats twice a year at her home in Italy, with styled fashion and beauty sessions held in her studio and on location.
Sarah lives with her family and large menagerie of animals in the hills overlooking Salò, Lake Garda, Italy.
